The Tsumeb municipality says it is busy with the evaluation of over 300 plots that were serviced for residential purposes.
The town plans to dispose of the land to qualifying individuals by the end of this month or early next month, mayor Mathews Hangula said.
“The process of allocation is nearing fruition as we edge towards concluding the evaluation process of the land to determine the price of each plot. By the second week of July, this process should be completed, and then we will head straight into disposing of it,” he stated.
His remarks come amid rife demand for land in Tsumeb. The town has run out of space to expand as surrounding areas are privately-owned.
Hangula said there is approximately 6 000 housing applicants on the council’s database.
“All those who qualify will be catered for. This number now may have reduced due to various factors, such as some applicants having acquired plots or houses through private treaty, while others have moved out of town. Therefore, I would like to inform the community to be on alert,” he added.
CEO appointment
Meanwhile, Hangula was evasive on divulging details surrounding the appointment of a new CEO, nearly 17 months since the resignation of Alfeus Benjamin.
“I can confirm we have received a response from the line minister. The management committee sat and deliberated on it, and I don’t sit in those meetings. So, I can’t tell what is really contained in the communique or the decision that councillors took. There was supposed to be a council meeting on Wednesday, but due to a number of colleagues who are still in isolation, we postponed it as no quorum could be met,” he explained.
He, however, said the appointment will be concluded in due course. A close source informed New Era that Usakos CEO Ivan Lombardt has emerged as a favourite to land the CEO position.
“I will not pre-empt what is to be discussed or unfolding, as it will be premature to speak about things that are still before council. We shall see this week whether all councillors will be available because we need to act with urgency,” said Hangula.
