Unbeaten Stars stretch lead to 10 points

Debmarine Namibia Premiership runaway log leaders African Stars are showing no signs of slowing down in their quest to win the coveted league title.

This follows a commanding 5-1 win over Citizens on Sunday that saw them pull 10 points clear at the top.  Already boosted by Saturday’s 1-0 win over Civics, Stars were unstoppable on Sunday as they ran riot in both halves on their way to a resounding 5-1 win over Citizens at the SKW stadium in the capital. The win took Stars lead to 35 points after 13 matches.

Reflecting on the weekend’s back-to-back victories, an elated Stars head coach Mervin Mbakera shared that their focus and main objective is to remain consistent with every match that comes and to avoid dropping crucial points as that could derail their league title campaign.

“Consistency is always key if you want to win the league and that remains our main goal.

On Saturday, against Civics, it was not the best of performances but the boys managed to show champions character on Sunday against Citizens and that is what we all want to see. It is not going to get any easier with the coming games, but we will continue to show character and strive for consistency. Everyone in the team is fully on board and we all understand our mission; which is to win the league title,” said Mbakera, who has guided Stars to a remarkable record of 12 wins and one draw from 13 games so far.  Meanwhile, second-placed Life Fighters remained in the hunt with a 3-1 win over Orlando Pirates on home turf at the Mokati stadium; a victory that saw them take their tally to 25 points and remaining on course on their chase for ultimate glory.  Third-placed Mighty Gunners ensured that they maintain pressure on Fighters with an away 1-0 win over Black Africa also on Sunday at the Khomasdal stadium. The narrow win moved them to 24 points and within touching distance of hometown rivals Fighters.

A goalless draw against Young Africans on Sunday at the Legare stadium in Gobabis derailed Okahandja United’s recent inspiring run as they now sit fourth with 22 points from 13 games, while a 0-1 defeat to Unam FC saw coastal giants Blue Waters missing out on an opportunity to boost their chances of moving within the top three on the table.

It was a fruitful Sunday for the likes of Eleven Arrows, Julinho Sporting and Young Brazilians, who all collected maximum points in their respective clashes. Arrows, who had earlier on Saturday lost 0-2 against Unam FC, bounced back with an emphatic 4-2 win over Black Africa.

Sporting moved into sixth position with a 2-1 win over Tigers, while Brazilians moved out of the relegation zone with a 1-0 victory over Civics.
