Wanderers eye Unam scalp …as Premier League continues

Wanderers Rugby Club head coach Dirk Human says his club is confident of victory over cross town rivals Unam on Saturday at the university rugby sports field.

Speaking to New Era Sport yesterday ahead of the clash, Human said he was confident that his side will secure maximum points on the road, even though they currently have several players on the injury list.

Wanderers, who are the defending champions currently sit on the second spot on the log with 33 points, trailing the leaders, Kudus, by just one point after completing eight games.

Meanwhile, former champions Unam, currently sit in the fifth place on the standings with 19 points after eight matches.

Tomorrow’s encounter holds immense importance for both teams, particularly for Wanderers, who have set their sights on claiming the top spot.

Human acknowledged the tough challenge that awaits his team in the match against Unam saying he is fully aware of the capabilities of their opponents as a cohesive unit.

“We are fully prepared to face Unam, recognising the tough contest that lies ahead. Although we have a few players sidelined due to injuries, we refuse to let that serve as an excuse. We place our trust in the individuals who have stepped up to fulfil their roles,” Human said.

“Undoubtedly, this will be one of our most demanding encounters, but we have faith in the current squad members. I am confident that the newcomers who have replaced the injured players will do us proud and accomplish the task at hand. Overall, I am pleased with the team’s current form, and we eagerly anticipate the challenge that awaits us,” he added.

On the other side, Unam’s head coach, Russel van Rooi, acknowledged the significance of Saturday’s encounter and affirmed his team’s readiness to face the imminent challenge.

He said training sessions throughout the week were met with weather-related difficulties, yet he remained positive.

“Training over the past week has been highly productive, and the players have exhibited remarkable energy levels. Our preparation for this monumental clash with Wanderers has been meticulous. As we all know, going head-to-head with Wanderers is never an easy task, and the team that displays the utmost determination will emerge victorious,” van Rooi highlighted.

Regarding the players who are unavailable for selection, van Rooi indicated that Andrew Kearns, Jason Benade, and Desiderius Sethie will not be playing for various reasons. In other fixtures, Western Suburbs will go up against Rehoboth, while Reho Falcons will take on the log leaders, Kudus.

United is set to face Grootfontein in an exciting showdown.
