… Dagbreek shows promise
WINDHOEK – The FNB Primary School Tennis League comprising of seven schools in the Under-10 and Under-14 age groups concluded in Windhoek, last week with a total of 120 players participating in the competition that commenced for the first time during 2013 under the auspices of the NTA FNB development programme.
Each team consisted of 4 boys and 4 girls with the ‘Play & Stay’ tennis format being applied as this particular format has softer and bigger tennis balls, as well as lower nets. Matches are also played on smaller courts, which assist players by teaching them tactics and technique at an early age. Dagbreek Special School adapted extremely well to the ‘Play & Stay’ format and challenged eventual winners of the U-14 age group Suiderhof Primary School, who defeated them in an exciting contest to the title. Windhoek Afrikaans Private School won the U-10 division, which they dominated throughout the competition and set high standards for their competitors. The league serves as an excellent platform for young players to start competetive tennis, while the best players selected from the development programme get passage to the performance programme.
