People in the rural parts of the Khomas Region are struggling to access adequate supplies of water due to a lack of technical experts in borehole rehabilitation.

Governor of the Khomas Region Sophia Shaningwa in an exclusive interview with New Era on Friday said throughout the year the council has struggled to get technical staff that can work on boreholes where rural Khomas residents encounter problems.

“One of the main challenges we are faced with is lack of technical staff, which is serious as people cannot live without water,” she said.

Shaningwa explained that areas such as Dordabis, Groot Aub, and Donkerhoek are distant from the main urban centres, and people living there rely on boreholes for their water.

She said some people in these areas do not have land and it is difficult for the council to acquire land for resettlement, considering that most of it is privately owned.

Giving an example of Ongombo farm, the governor said the area was meant for six families only but over the years, many other families have flocked to the area to settle.

The numbers of Orphans and Vulnerable Children (OVC) in the region continues to grow.
