By Frederick Philander WINDHOEK Bank Windhoek announced that its annual apple project in aid of the battle against cancer has sold more than half million apples among Namibian school learners this year. According to the bank, in the pre-primary category the Kleuter Kapperjolle in Windhoek was the winning school with 576 apples sold per learner. The Omaruru Afrikaans Private School took the honours in the primary category by selling 259 apples per learner. The Dolphin Elementary SS in Walvis Bay is the proud winner of the secondary school category and managed to sell 100 apples per learner. The prize monies will be handed over to the winning schools and the total amount raised to the Cancer Association of Namibia on May 24. “In addition, each winning school in their individual categories will also receive N$5 000 from Bank Windhoek for selling the most apples. The winning educational institutions were determined by calculating the average of apples bought per child; thus giving even the smallest schools a chance to win the competition,” said Senior Manager of Marketing and Corporate Communication Services at Bank Windhoek, Marlize Horn, in a statement by the bank. In a national effort Namibians ordered approximately 680 000 apples through the 2006 Bank Windhoek Cancer Apple Project in aid of the Cancer Association of Namibia. “This is a growth of 60% in apple sales from the 2005 project. We are delighted about the total amount of apples ordered through the Bank Windhoek Cancer Apple Project, especially because we exceeded our target of selling 500 000 apples this year by far. By ordering an apple for N$2 the Namibian public have shown their commitment to help in the fight against cancer. Bank Windhoek and our project partners are very grateful for each and every Namibian that supported the project during the past few months. This project truly demonstrates that together we do better,” said Horn.
