A car accident on the road between Usakos and Arandis on Sunday evening claimed the life of one delegate to the Cabinet retreat currently underway here and left another hospitalised.

Dr Munusuru Rao, a consultant who assisted the Namibian Government in the formulation of various national policies, most notably the third instalment of the National Development Plans, NDP3, was killed in the accident after the car he was travelling in overturned. Sylvia Demas, a director at the
National Planning Commission who was travelling in the same vehicle sustained injuries and is recove-ring at a hospital in Swakopmund.

Confirming the accident during his opening speech at the retreat, President Hifikepunye Pohamba conveyed his condolences to Rao’s family, as well as comforting words to Demas’ family.

Noting Rao’s contribution to the country, Pohamba said his work was most visible in the formulation of NDP3 as a consultant.

According to the event programme, Rao was to act as a resource person on empowerment, a theme to be discussed during the retreat. Demas was placed on the programme as a resource person on health, housing and sanitation.
