The Outapi Town Council, Road Fund Administration and Roads Authority have joined forces by signing a two-year memorandum of understanding to improve the roads infrastructure at the town.
This collaboration aims to clean streets, fix drainage damages and maintain road signs.
Additionally, the agreement includes significant upgrades, such as upgrading a section of main road MR92, and constructing stormwater drainage, pavements and capacity improvements on MR123 (Outapi-Tsandi) to prevent flooding.
The work is set to commence next month.
CEOs Conrad Lutombi (RA), Ali Ipinge (RFA) and Ananias Nashilongo (Outapi) and town mayor Selma Asino attended the signing ceremony this week in Windhoek.
“The RFA at that platform has re-emphasised its commitment to play its part in the development and expansion of the Namibian roads network, both nationally and locally, by assisting local authorities to maintain their urban arterial roads and streets,” Ipinge said.
Asino noted that the council is faced with numerous challenges with the current state of the main road, M123 (Outapi–Tsandi main road).
“This road is severely congested, with traffic volumes far exceeding its capacity. The high traffic has led to frequent potholes, requiring constant maintenance,” she said.
Despite receiving annual funds for road maintenance, the funds have been insufficient to address the critical improvements
needed.
“As the administrative centre of the Omusati region, Outapi plays a crucial role in the region’s governance and development. The town’s status as an administrative hub brings increased traffic and demand for infrastructure,” she added.
Asino said this collaboration will not only address the current challenges, but also pave the way for future growth and development.
“By investing in better roads, we are investing in the future of Outapi. Improved roads infrastructure will attract businesses, create job opportunities and enhance the quality of life for our residents,” she observed.
