ONGWEDIVA – Robberies were at an all time high on New Year’s Day following a relatively quite and incident free festive season.
In the Omusati Region police are searching for a man who robbed a cuca shop at gunpoint in the early hours of yesterday morning. The robbery happened at around 01h00 am at Yellow Bar in the Onandjinda location at Okahao in the OmusatiRegion.
According to Omusati police spokesperson Warrant Officer Lineekela Shikongo, what is strange about the robbery is that the suspect allegedly smashed through the window of a back room where a lady who tends the bar was fast asleep. Startled by the noise caused by the breaking glass the lady got up only to find a man standing by the window pointing a gun at her. The robber allegedly ordered the bar tender to open the door to her room and instructed the lady to also open the door of the bar, where he took cash amounting to N$8000 and the lady’s cellular phone before disappearing into the night. Police opened a case of robbery and the suspect is still at large. In a separate incident the owner of a poultry project at Okakwiyu, a village in Ondangwa’s Olukonda neighbourhood sustained injuries on his bottom after four armed robbers robbers stabbed him with a knife and beat him on the head with a gun. The 42-year-old Erastus Indongo was robbed of two beak cutters and a cell phone valued at N$4000. The incident happened on January 1, 2014. No arrests or recoveries have been made. At Oshakati, some armed robbers broke into the Nami Investment business premises by cutting through the rooftop.
The robbers, who are still on the run, made off with digital cameras, laptops and memory cards valued at N$60 000.
