Rundu
Rundu residents over the weekend cleaned up Rundu Beach that is popular for recreation among residents and visitors alike.
The aim was to make the recreational facility conducive as it is that time of the year again when Rundu residents as well as visitors spend their weekend afternoons at Rundu Beach to cool off from the heat and have refreshments.
According to one of the cleaning campaign organisers, Jerry Kauyu: “The idea was to voluntarily clean the recreational facility and this came to us when one day as we were gathered at the facility, socialising as we always do most weekends, and as we were looking around our only leisure and recreational facility, which is our Rundu Beach, we could not help but notice the litter which is slowly swallowing the river beach and we had to hold ourselves responsible for the filth and vandalism the place has suffered, so we thought of a cleaning campaign.”
“After discussing the matter we wrote a letter to the town council and they gave us the go-ahead, and so we planned the campaign. The motivation also became stronger after various businesses agreed to assist us in different ways for our cleaning campaign to be successful,” said another organizer, Christine Shimuketa. Rundu based companies Namibia Investment Contacts, M&D Construction, Otjia Trading and Vonke Electrical collectively donated trucks and equipment to the campaign on Saturday and Sunday.
Vonke Electrical installed two floodlights at the beach, and the firms also provided refreshments to participants who spent their time cleaning up the beach.
“We really thank the local businesses and people that assisted us, we also thank NBC RuKavango Service for helping us to put the message across for people to come join us. We also got assistance from AMTA; we also thank the hostel learners of Dr Romanus Kampungu Secondary School for joining in to clean and we really appreciate them for coming,” said Kauyu.
Companies such as QUAL IT, an IT firm, assigned five workers who participated in the cleaning campaign while M&D Construction also brought in 34 workers to help out, and there were also three workers from the Rundu Town Council.
“We hope the town council in the near future will plan to bring in labourers to clean the facility regularly even on a part-time basis as this place’s image should be taken care of,” stressed Kauyu.
“As you know Rundu is popularly known for its Rundu Beach and thus the image should be kept clean so that when visitors come to town they can see a clean river beach,” further stated Kauyu.
“We should avoid throwing cans and bottles anywhere around the beach; let’s keep this place clean for ourselves and our visitors,” Shimuketa added.
Kavango Pharmacy and Rundu Biokinetic also assisted with the cleaning campaign.
