The Bank Windhoek 2025 School Closed Chess Championships took place on Saturday at Windhoek High School.

The event was the grand final for the top three winners from the previously-held zonal tournaments across various regions. With an impressive turnout of 270 players, participants travelled from the far north, south and coastal areas of Namibia.

Acting president of the Namibia Chess Federation, Berdian Beukes said the atmosphere was electric, with players displaying immense passion, and parents eagerly supporting their children.

“This high-stakes championship featured the top contenders, ranging from ages U/7 to U/19. Players competed with determination and skill, each vying for a spot to represent Namibia at the upcoming 2025 FIDE World Schools Chess Championships in Vrnjacka Banja, Serbia. The tournament followed a Swiss-System format, ensuring fair and dynamic matchu-ps throughout the event,” he said.

The event served as a connection, learning, and personal growth platform. It brought together players, coaches and supporters to celebrate chess, fostering camaraderie and a spirit of perseverance. The gathering underscored chess’ impact in Namibia as a game and a tool for critical thinking, discipline and community engagement.

The following are the winners in each category: Michael Ndofor Clement (boys U/7), Klara Mahnke (girls U/7), Frederick Cronje (boys U/9), Christiaan Cronje (boys U/13), Helen Boshoff (girls U/13), David du Toit (boys U/15) and Indila Abraham (girls U/17).
