The 2016 wage negotiations between Skorpion Zinc and the recognised bargaining union (MUN Skorpion BEC) were successfully concluded on March 2 and an agreement to this effect has been signed. “The 2016 wage negotiations take place at a time when the sustained lower commodity prices and higher cost of production have significantly eroded the profitability of our business. This is also on the back of a challenging financial year where production and profitability was negatively impacted by the extended refinery shut, industrial action and several operational challenges across our business in 2015.
“Despite these challenges, management remains committed to maintaining a stable, positive and committed workforce. With the conclusion of this agreement, I would like to implore all our employees to re-dedicate themselves to making Skorpion great. We will continue driving a culture of excellence, accountability and performance,” said Irvinne Simataa, general manager of Skorpion Zinc.
The agreement was based on a four percent increment for continuous operation employees, six percent increment for clerical employees and five percent for engineering employees. In addition, the parties have agreed to a N$500 increase in housing allowance in respect of employees performing continuous operations.
Simataa added that the successful and peaceful conclusion to the wage negotiations is a clear indication of the entrenched and mutual commitment to a sustainable future of Skorpion Zinc and with a view to benefit all stakeholders.
