WALVIS BAY – During a sting operation, the police arrested a man and a woman who were posing as dentists near Ekutu Latika informal market in Walvis Bay on Thursday.

The duo has allegedly been travelling all over Namibia to perform dental procedures without any qualifications or registration with the Namibia Dental Association.

Their arrest was confirmed by sergeant Annastasia Frans of the Namibian Police in Erongo.

She says they are charged for contravening the Medical and Dental Act of Namibia.

“They unlawfully and intentionally operated dental activities without operating licences and registration with the Medical Dental Council,” Frans said.

A resident, Given Mutzi who worked along with the police and the health ministry to arrest the two suspects said he was introduced by a woman who also had a procedure done by them.

“She had braces fitted on her lower jaw that was allegedly done at home. I also wanted to have my teeth replaced and was under the impression that they are legal dentists,” he explained.

They were supposed to charge him N$2 000.

He, however, became suspicious of the manner in which they operated and contacted some friends in the medical field who advised him to contact the police and the health ministry.

“They called me yesterday (Wednesday) saying they are back in town and asked whether I am still interested. I alerted the other dentist and engaged health ministry and the police department who arrested them the same day,” he said.

The suspects are expected to appear in court today.
