The economic cake in the Namibian House should be shared equally among all Namibians, so that every individual benefits from the fruits of Namibia’s development.

Speaking at the Swapo //Karas regional executive committee’s ordinary meeting at Keetmanshoop on Saturday, Swapo secretary general Nangolo Mbumba Mbumba said if people live in the same house, they should equally benefit from the resources of that house.

“If we are living in the same house, you can’t have some people having the luxury of all the good things, while others are looking at us driving cars and we’re not doing anything for them,” he stated.

Directing his remarks to the regional and local councillors in attendance, Mbumba said the aim of politics is to achieve something in society, explaining that Swapo as a political party was not established so that people can fill positions and have titles, but to achieve something for the people.

Mbumba urged all councillors to work hard and deliver on the promises they made to voters, saying a promise is a debt and the councillors have the responsibility to honour that debt. He recollected how hard it was to join Swapo during the liberation struggle, as joining simply invited trouble and problems. Many people were sent to prison, while some went into exile.

During that period some family members gave up on the party activists, as they were not in touch with family members for years and were feared dead, “but we are still alive,” Mbumba pointed out.

“What is the purpose of being alive if you’re not doing anything for yourself and for your people? What is the purpose of having the title of councillor if you’re not doing anything for your people?” he asked.

He also urged the youth, whom he says are in a hurry to take over the hot seats of government, to be well informed and well educated and be ready to take over when the time comes, saying they should not only work with their cell phones to send messages, as history will not be measured by that.

“We are happy that you are in a hurry to get in the hot seat in which we are. We will not refuse you to occupy them, but be prepared and be ready,” he said. “Work with your hands, develop the country with your hands. History is not going to be measured by how many SMSes you sent to other people, but on what you built.”

Mbumba further encouraged everyone in attendance to continue to promote economic development and called on the members to ensure that party structures in particular to be in place and operational.
