Shikongo calls for continued calm as votes are counted

Shikongo calls for continued calm as votes are counted

Namibian Police Force supremo, Inspector General Joseph Shikongo has commended the peaceful process in which Namibia’s elections, which began Wednesday and ended on Saturday, were held.

In an interview at the TransNamib polling station in Windhoek on Saturday, Shikongo told Nampa the Namibian Police Force has been monitoring the situation across all 14 regions, via its regional commanders, to ensure public safety and order.

“Since Wednesday, the situation has remained calm, relatively calm. In terms of security, we are fine,” he stated.

He emphasised that the police force is ready to address any issues that might arise as the election results are announced. He called on political parties and citizens to resolve disputes through peaceful and legal channels.

“If there are people contemplating resorting to violence, we are ready to engage and navigate any issues through proper coordination,” he said.

He also highlighted the role of the Electoral Act in maintaining order, noting that law enforcement officers are prepared to act if necessary.

“The provisions of the Electoral Act are very clear. If someone violates it, we will take the necessary action,” he added.

Shikongo appealed to all Namibians to prioritise peace and unity.

“This is our Namibia. Let us maintain peace and stability in our republic,” he urged.
