City of Windhoek’s mayor for the last eight years, Matheus Shikongo, was again re-elected to the post at a city council meeting on Monday evening. His deputy, Elaine Trepper, was also re-elected. A five-member management committee was elected as well. They are councillors Agnes Kafula, G. Kamatuka, L. Shaetonhodi, Joseph Shikongo and BjÃÆ’Æ‘Æ‘ÃÆ”šÃ‚¶rn von Finkenstein. The term of office for the office-bearers came to an end on May 13 and they will again serve for a term of one year. “It is my wish to leave behind a city for generations to come that is not afraid to solve even the toughest problems. We have a role to play in making this more than a dream, but a reality,” said Shikongo in his acceptance speech. He commented that municipal service delivery is increasingly becoming a challenge to local authorities around the country, prompting the need to revise the approach on local governance. The drawbacks in local governance, he said, are inadequate resources, the high rate of urbanization, unemployment, lack of skilled human resources, the HIV/AIDS scourge, slow economic growth and increasing costs for municipal services. The Ministry of Regional and Local Government, Housing and Rural Development has constituted a Local Authorities Reform Committee to investigate and mitigate these challenges.
