Kasheshe

The Minister of Gender Equality and Child Welfare, Doreen Sioka, has urged the community of Kasheshe, some 30 kilometres south of Katima Mulilo, not to discriminate against the San.

According to Sioka she has learnt that San in the area are being made to fetch water from the well, while there are taps within the area with potable water.

“Why should they go and fetch water from the well while you are drinking water from taps? – let them also fetch water from taps. I want to see the San people from this area equal with others,” stressed a seemingly agitated Sioka.
Sioka was speaking at a handover ceremony at Kasheshe Combined School, which was handed construction materials to improve the community hostel at the school. The community hostel at the school, which is built with mud and corrugated iron, is currently incomplete as it is without doors.

It is with this in mind that Sioka and the patron of the school Richard Kambinda and a few other individuals raised N$10 000 for the purchase of construction material to complete the hostel.

New Era was also informed that San learners at the school have been going hungry for some time, however their plight was recently addressed after the patron of the school came to their rescue.

Speaking at the handover ceremony, Kambinda said that after learning of the situation he engaged the regional council, which later responded and the school management confirmed that San at the school are now receiving morning, afternoon and evening meals.
