SMEs’ spotlight with Pricilla Mukokobi – OMDis centre drives Oranjemund small business growth

The OMDis SME Centre is strengthening small businesses in Oranjemund by offering training, mentorship and access to markets as part of efforts to grow the town’s local economy.

OMDis is a settlement transformation agency, tasked with the sole purpose of proactively accelerating the town transformation and the economic diversification of Oranjemund.

This ensures the town’s sustainability by 2030 and beyond. The centre serves as a support hub for small and medium enterprises (SMEs), providing entrepreneurs with practical tools, knowledge and connections to help their businesses grow and remain sustainable. Acting general manager Aunie Gideon said the organisation is focused on building a strong SME sector in the town.

“OMDis is committed to fulfilling its mandate by working with experienced and qualified SME development service providers to address the challenges faced by small businesses in Oranjemund,” she said.

She added that the centre recognises the importance of SMEs in driving economic growth and job creation.

“A thriving SME sector is critical to economic sustainability. We are investing in equipping local entrepreneurs with modern business training that provides practical and realistic approaches to business growth,” Gideon said. The centre offers business training and capacity building through workshops and masterclasses.

These cover financial literacy, digital marketing, business management, legal compliance and operational efficiency.

“We want to ensure that entrepreneurs are not only starting businesses, but that they are able to manage and grow them successfully,” she said. In addition to training, the centre creates platforms for networking and collaboration.  Through business forums and industry discussions, SMEs relate to investors, clients and potential partners.

“Creating spaces where entrepreneurs can meet, share ideas and build partnerships is key to unlocking new opportunities,” Gideon said.

The OMDis SME Centre also coordinates events such as markets, exhibitions and pitch competitions, giving businesses exposure and a chance to increase sales.

“Our key events, including the OMDis Farmers Market, the Oranjemund Entrepreneurship Expo and the Women in Business Conference, are designed to promote local businesses and create real market opportunities,” she said.

Entrepreneurs also benefit from one-on-one consultations, where they receive tailored advice on business registration, planning, financial management and marketing strategies.

“We guide SMEs through the process of formalising their businesses and ensuring they meet regulatory requirements, while also helping them access funding opportunities,” Gideon said.

Since 2020, SMEs Compete has partnered with OMDis to provide basic business skills training in Oranjemund.

“This partnership has helped lay a strong foundation for entrepreneurship in the town, especially for those starting out,” she said.

Gideon said the centre also plays a role in driving economic diversification in Oranjemund, a town historically dependent on mining. “As part of our mandate, we are committed to fostering a thriving entrepreneurial ecosystem that supports both emerging and established businesses,” she said.

“Our approach includes mentorship, incubation, access to funding and creating platforms for market exposure,” she added.

She said special focus is given to youth and women entrepreneurs to ensure inclusive growth. “By cultivating a culture of entrepreneurship, we aim to strengthen Oranjemund’s economic resilience and unlock long-term growth opportunities for local businesses,” Gideon said.
