The Namibia Sports Commission (NSC) yesterday officially launched the 2015 edition of its annual MTC NSC Sports Awards, slated for the Safari Court Hotel in the capital on October 23.
Marketed as one of the biggest sporting events on the Namibian calendar, the awards recognise and reward the crème de la crème in the Namibian sports fraternity, while also striving to harness a winning culture on the local sports scene.
MTC, who have been the headline sponsor of the prestigious awards for more than five years, have this year once again reaffirmed their commitment with a sponsorship of N$600 000, while Nampower again joined in, with a sponsorship of N$350 000.
This year’s judges are Talitha Jario (chairperson), Lesley Tjiueza, Carlos Kambaekwa, Patrick Haingura and Monica Dahl. Speaking at the launch yesterday, NSC chairperson Amos Shiyuka urged all sports codes to submit their nominations on time, in order to avoid unwanted errors.
Shiyuka also said the awards are not just merely about the prize monies, but about recognising those men and women who excelled beyond expectations and hoisted the Namibian flag high nationally, continentally and internationally.
He added that this year’s awards would also be held under the same theme as last year, which is ‘Creating a winning sporting nation’.
As for this year, prize monies for the Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year is N$100 000 each; while Disabled Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year will equally pocket N$100 000 each.
The Disabled Junior Sportsman and Sportswoman will each receive N$50 000, while the Most Improved Sportsperson of the Year will get N$50 000.
Winners of the Coach, Referee/Umpire and Administrator of the Year categories will each receive N$30 000; while a handsome N$70 000 has been earmarked for Team of the Year. The Development Programme of the Year will receive N$100 000.
