Standard Bank backs crayfish festival with N$150 000

Standard Bank Namibia has given N$150 000 to support the 2026 Lüderitz Crayfish Festival, one of the country’s biggest coastal events.

The sponsorship was announced by Lüderitz branch manager Vinia Ndakondja at a fundraising gala dinner attended by business leaders and community members.

This year’s festival will take place from 28 April to 3 May under the theme “Harvesting Sustainability, Empowering Communities.”

Ndakondja said the bank’s support goes beyond money.
“For us, this is about working with the community and supporting growth in this region. The festival helps small businesses and promotes sustainable development,” she said.

Standard Bank Namibia said supporting events like this is part of its long-term plan to grow local economies. The bank, which has served Namibians for over 110 years, continues to invest in community-driven projects that create jobs and support small businesses.

The Lüderitz Crayfish Festival started as a small local event to celebrate the town’s rich fishing heritage, especially crayfish, also known as rock lobster. Over the years, it has grown into a major national event, attracting thousands of visitors from across Namibia and beyond.

Today, it is one of the country’s top expos. It brings business to hotels, restaurants, and local shops. It also gives small businesses, young entrepreneurs, and artists a chance to sell their products and services.

Festival chairperson Alex Governab said the event has become a key part of Lüderitz’s identity.
“The festival was created to showcase our marine resources and coastal culture. Now it is a big national event where we welcome people to celebrate who we are,” he said.

He said the festival connects the town’s fishing history with its growing tourism industry.

“It is not just a party. It shows the pride and spirit of our people,” he said.

Governab added that this year’s fundraising dinner raised more than N$780 000, the highest amount so far. The money will help improve the event, with new attractions such as the Miss Crayfish pageant.

The festival plays an important role in Lüderitz’s economy. During the event, the town becomes busy, with increased trade and job opportunities. Many local people earn income from selling food, crafts, and services.
