To shape the future of vending activities in the Tukondjeni market, well-known as Stop n Shop, the City of Windhoek engaged the vending operators in that area regarding their operations.
The City has instructed the vendors to clean the marketplace by next Sunday.
The meeting aimed to find solutions for locating the vendors. It addressed issues such as road trading, cleanliness, illegal trading, public health, disaster and risk management as well as safety and security.
Windhoek mayor Queen Kamati informed the vendors that illegal trading is unlawful.
The City does not plan to remove illegal vendors.
However, there is a need for them to start contributing to water services, and maintaining cleanliness in the area.
Officials warned those who have made the marketplace their bedrooms to discontinue this practice.
They also cautioned those who have constructed their stalls on the road to refrain from doing so.
Meanwhile, the City is actively seeking solutions for all traders in Windhoek.
The meeting was attended by more than 500 vendors. –NBC
