WINDHOEK – A long-distance taxi driver was arrested at the Oshivelo roadblock on Thursday last week for attempting to bribe a Nabta official that was manning the roadblock with the police.
According to Sergeant Slogan Matheus the driver was operating a minibus taxi without the necessary public transport permit. When he reached the roadblock he attempted to bribe the Nabta official with an offer of N$250, but the official who was not named alerted the police.
Matheus told the media during the regular media briefing on Monday that the driver was issued with a spot fine for not having a public transport permit and was arrested for the attempted bribery.
It was also reported at the media briefing that two murders took place in Windhoek over the Easter weekend. In the first instance 32-year old Adrian Burger was shot and killed by a suspected burglar.
According to police reports, Burger and his father Allen were woken by someone trying to break into their neighbour’s flat at Bela Rosa Carolina Flats in Rocky Crest. When they went to investigate one of the suspected burglars fired shots in their direction. A bullet wounded the 62-year-old Allen Burger on the right elbow and then went on to hit the deceased in the stomach. Adrian died at the scene while being attended to by paramedics. No arrests were made and police investigations continue.
In the other murder incident, 22-year-old Mario Cloete died from a stab wound to the chest in Zedekias Ougamb Street in the Gemeente Location in Katutura on Saturday night between 22h00 and 23h00. It is alleged that the deceased was part of a large group of people drinking at a local shebeen when an argument erupted and a mob fight broke out. During the fight the deceased was stabbed with a sharp object and he died upon arrival at the Katutura State Hospital.
The suspect had not been arrested and police investigations continue.
Two IT students were robbed of their belongings at Ausspannplatz on Thursday. It is alleged that a suspect requested a cigarette lighter from them and while they were searching for it the suspect produced a firearm and ordered them to hand over their belongings.
A second suspect then joined and searched the students and the two suspects got away with one Acer laptop, two laptop bags, an internet device, external hard drive, four cellphones, two Notebooks and a laptop charger valued at N$25 428. The suspects were still at large and police investigations continue.
It was also reported that a 16-year-old suspect was arrested for housebreaking with intent to steal and theft. No further information was provided. It was further confirmed by Commissioner Sylvanus Nghisindimbwa that no fatal accidents were reported over the weekend in the Khomas Region.
