Teacher to stand trial for rape

A teacher who was arrested last year for having sex with pupils at his school in Windhoek, will stand trial on the allegations.

Ariestides Nathaniel Kamatuka (54) was informed yesterday that the prosecutor general has decided to arraign him on charges of rape.

The prosecutor general indicated that the accused is to stand trial in the Windhoek Regional Court, and is to make his first appearance there on 8 April. According to state prosecutor Sylvia Kauluma, the State will prepare for his case to be transferred to the Regional Court.

During his court appearance yesterday in the Windhoek Magistrate’s Court before magistrate Linus Samunzala, Kamatuka was granted bail of N$10 000.

As a condition for his release on bail, he may not leave the district of Windhoek without the prior consent of the investigating officer, should hand over all travel documents, and may not apply for new ones.

Furthermore, he should report himself to the gender-based violence unit every Monday, and may not interfere with the victims or witnesses.

Kamatuka, who has since resigned from his position, is facing two counts of rape, of which one victim is a minor.

It is alleged that he sexually violated the victims on 3 February 2021 at the Jan Möhr Secondary School premises. He has since denied the allegations.

At the time of his arrest last year, allegations against Kamatuka caused public outrage and demonstrations in solidarity with the victims.
