RUNDU – A 19-year-old youngster from Rundu who was arrested last week in Kavango West for being in possession of 115 parcels of cannabis, collectively weighing about 68kg and valued at N$682 850, was remanded in custody after the State objected to bail.

The teenager was nabbed last Wednesday at the Mururani police checkpoint, and identified as Manuweleb Aelesabri Dala. He appeared before Rundu magistrate Helen Olaiya on Friday, who postponed the matter to 5 July for further police investigations.

“Investigations are not yet finalised as they are still in the initial stages. The offence is serious, and it will not be in the interest of the administration of justice if bail is granted at this stage,’’ said public prosecutor Michael Munika.

The court, however, informed the accused teen of his rights to launch a formal bail application.

The accused appeared on charges of dealing in dependence-producing substances and the possession of dependence-producing substances which the police found in his possession in four suitcases during a search. According to the police, the accused was travelling from Rundu en route to the Otjozondjupa region.
