Telecom Namibia (TN) is actively implementing an extensive network modernisation programme aimed at significantly improving service reliability, speed, and overall customer experience across the country. The modernisation drive forms part of Telecom’s broader commitments under its 2027 Integrated Strategic Business Plan (ISBP).
These initiatives are part of a phased, long-term strategy. Telecom spokesperson, Nomvula Kambinda, noted that while some customers may experience intermittent disruptions during upgrade activities, the improvements are essential to delivering a more robust and future-ready network.
Telecom Namibia has acknowledged network challenges recently experienced in parts of the country and the impact these issues have on customers and businesses.
As part of ongoing network modernisation efforts, Telecom Namibia is upgrading core network infrastructure to improve stability, capacity and resilience. This includes implementing a converged FMC Core, which is set to enhance network performance, strengthen connectivity, and improve service reliability nationwide.
In partnership with SATEC, Telecom Namibia is also developing a next-generation platform aimed at delivering a seamless and unified customer experience. This is further expected to simplify billing and provide a more integrated view and management of both fixed and mobile services.
More modernisation efforts include upgrading backup power systems (generators, batteries and solar hybrid systems) to ensure uninterrupted service delivery and deployment of advanced firewalls to safeguard TN and customer data. Modernising access technologies, including mobile and fixed broadband platforms, to support higher data speeds and growing demand. This includes mobile network upgrades and expansion, upgrading 2G & 3G sites to 4G and 4.5G.
Telecom’s network improvement includes the rollout of fibre country-wide, which is expected to deliver significantly faster data transfer speeds, improve communication and access to information, enhance business efficiency and productivity and provide future-ready infrastructure to support sustainable growth.
In addition, TN, through its subsidiary, Powercom has increased the number of mobile base stations by 11 new base stations and upgraded 8 sites in 2026 and is planning another 19 new sites by the end of 2026.
“The company is taking deliberate steps to minimise service disruptions during network upgrades, maintaining continuity while critical improvements are implemented”, Kambinda stated.
