Two suspects accused in the murder and robbery case involving a German couple in July this year, appeared in the Windhoek Magistrate’s Court yesterday.
The suspects, Fanuel Festus Shipanga, 37, and Paulus Kamati, 26, appeared before magistrate Rina Horn.
They face charges of armed robbery and murder with aggravating circumstances and were not asked to plead.
The two were remanded in custody to March 3 next year pending further investigations.
The magistrate explained their right to legal representation of their choice. Both have already applied for legal aid.
The case before the court is that Shipanga and Kamati robbed and murdered a 56-year-old German tourist, Johannes Fellinger on July 8 this year as he was trying to rescue his wife.
The suspects allegedly attacked the couple along Khomas Hochland Road. They allegedly shot Fellinger in the head when he tried to rescue his wife whom they had attacked.
After killing him, they loaded his body into the couple’s rented car and drove off in the vehicle with the body at the back. They finally dumped the body in a riverbed before overturning the car and fleeing on foot.
The two were on the run until Shipanga was arrested in Ondangwa on August 3 and Kamati was arrested a month later at a service station along the capital’s Mandume Ndemufayo Avenue.
The case seems to have generated a lot of interest, as journalists from the German media, such as Deutsche Welle, were also present at court to cover the proceedings.
