Tune father-son duo clinches victory at Nedbank Classic

Tune father-son duo clinches victory at Nedbank Classic

Michael Snr Tune and Michael Jnr Tune dominated the 2024 Nedbank Desert Classic at the Rössmund Golf Course in Swakopmund on 28 and 29 December. The pair scored 46 points on day one and 48 on day two, winning with a total of 94 points.

They narrowly beat Fritz Coetzee Jnr and Fritz Coetzee Snr, who finished second with 93 points, after scoring 45 points in round one and 48 in round two. Third place went to John Emuno and Gabriel Andreas, who also finished with 93 points.

Tune Snr praised the organisers and sponsors, calling it a fantastic tournament. “I’ve played in this event for 10 years with different partners, but joining forces with my son in 2023 was special. To dethrone the back-to-back champions this year makes it even sweeter,” he said.

After round one, the Tunes were four points behind the leaders, but a strong performance on day two helped them clinch the win by just one point. “At the 18th hole, I thought we were in the top four, but my son was confident we had won. When I saw everyone looking at us during the results announcement, I started to believe we’d done it,” he added.

Tournament coordinator Dan Zwiebel of DZ Golf hailed the event as a huge success, thanking players, sponsors, and organisers. Gernot de Klerk, Nedbank Namibia’s Executive Head of Marketing and Communications, emphasised the bank’s commitment to promoting golf in Namibia.

The tournament used the Better Ball Stableford format with a scramble drive, and 72 teams participated. The event was sponsored by Nedbank Namibia and Hollard.
