Sixteen travellers narrowly escaped death in the Ohangwena Region recently, after an unlicensed driver lost control of a vehicle in which he was transporting them and overturned. But two other passengers were not so fortunate and lost their lives.
The incident took place at around 14h00 last Sunday on the Elundu/Okankolo gravel road at Elundu Village in the Ohangwena Region. A case of culpable homicide is now under investigation.
The two who lost their lives on the spot were a 25-year-old man and a six-month-old baby.
According to the latest crime bulletin, five other passengers suffered serious bodily injuries and eleven were slightly injured.
It is reported that the driver, 25-year-old Epafras Nghilushixwa Mwandi, who is not in possession of a driver’s licence, overturned the vehicle after he lost control.
Five of the seriously injured passengers were admitted to the Oshakati State Hospital.
The suspect has been arrested and police investigations continue.
Two other road accidents were reported by the police on Sunday. At around 18:00 on the Windhoek/Rehoboth main road, approximately three kilometres from the police checkpoint, 25-year-old Glenis Bailey died at the scene after the driver of a Nissan 1400 pick-up lost control and the vehicle overturned.
One of the passengers who were at the back of the pick-up sustained head injuries. Other passengers got away with slight injuries.
The injured were all taken to the Katutura State Hospital.
In a case of reckless and negligent driving in the north, a driver of a Toyota Hilux pick-up 4×4 lost control of his vehicle and overturned.
Both the driver and two passengers sustained minor injuries, while two others had to be admitted to the Outapi District Hospital for serious injuries.
This incident happened along the Outapi/Onandjaba gravel road, near Onelao village in Ombalantu.
Several reports of escape from lawful custody were also reported in the Karas Region over the weekend. Two suspects 27-year-old Justin Fredericks and 19-year-old Jeffrey Tobias escaped from lawful custody.
The incident happened last Friday at 21:12 when “they broke the padlocks of the door and kicked the front door of the cells open,” reads the crime report.
The suspects were however re-arrested at around 10:00 the following day.
Similarly, around midday 28-year-old Angula David broke out of the police holding cell at the Bethanie Police Station. The suspect is still at large while police investigations continue.
Housebreaking and theft were other crimes listed in the police report as being the most frequent in the Karas Region.
