By Anita Kaihiva The Unam Choir has certainly come of age. Launched back in the early 90’s and, since 1997, under the adept leadership of Bonnie Pereko, today the Unam Choir boasts a musical programme and possesses a presence that will stun audiences worldwide. Whilst maintaining the proud tradition of a predominantly African choir, continuously exploring Namibian and African choral articulations, the Unam Choir endeavours to include various music styles from far beyond Namibian borders, reflecting the Unam Choir’s pro-active mission to explore and master a challenging range of modernÃÆ’Æ‘ÀÃ…ÃÆ”šÃ‚ choral expression. Hence the title of the Unam Choir’s latest CD – to be officially released at the Warehouse Theatre this weekend – Ondjila, which translates as ‘The Way’ or ‘The Road’ in Oshiwambo. The ‘road’ takes the listener on an Afrikaans, Russian, Italian, even Finnish excursion, thence returning to Africa with renditions in Xhosa, Sotho, Zulu, Tswana and, again, back to the musical homeland – where Nama, Oshiwambo, Herero or Kwangali traditional and contemporary styles rule. The greater part of the CD was recorded at the Unam Hall in May 2006, with a few tracks added later in the NBC studios. Db Audio signs were responsible for recording and mastering. The CD sleeve and cover were designed and conceptualized by J. Rittmann. To listen to these songs, is heaven. To play the CD beyond the Universal canon and to experience traditional Namibian reflections, becomes divine. The Unam Choir, in a vibrant, vital and energetic fashion, delivers sketches from a typical Namibian/African ritual, filled with melody, harmony and glorious sound. The Warehouse Theatre and the University of Namibia collaborated to launch ‘Ondjila’ at the Warehouse Theatre on Friday, October 20, at 20h00 for 21h00, with a Unam Choir performance and a curtain raiser by Lydia Garises and band. Advance tickets are available at the Warehouse Theatre between 10h00 and 18h00 daily (except for Mondays and Sundays) at a price of N$45. The ticket price at the door will be N$55.
