Unam, Wanderers square off in NRU finals…Kudus face Wanderers in reserves showdown

Dirk Human, head coach of Wanderers, anticipates a highly competitive clash against the University of Namibia (Unam) in the Namibia Rugby Union (NRU) league final this weekend, saying either team could emerge victorious.

However, he expressed a strong desire for his team to clinch the title.

The two rugby giants will face off in the finals at the Hage Geingob Stadium in the capital.

Unam, the former league champions, top the table with 77 points, followed closely by Wanderers with 75 points.

Last year’s champions, United, failed to make the cut this season, finishing fifth with 42 points.

In the reserve’s final, Wanderers 2 will take on coastal side Kudus.

Meanwhile, in the women’s league, defending champions Unam will face the Wanderers’ women’s team.

Speaking to this publication, Human said preparations had gone well, with the team using their week off to rest and refocus.

He remains confident in his squad’s ability to secure the much-needed win.

“This is a huge match, and every player understands how big it is. Everyone will give it their all,” he said.

“Unam is a strong team with experienced players, and we’ve seen their dominance in the past. But this is the final. While we respect them, we are aiming for the honours. With the right mindset, we could be in a great position to win it this year,” he said.

Regarding injuries, Human said two players are nursing minor issues, but are expected to be fit by Saturday.

“We are closely monitoring them,” he added.

On the women’s side, Unam’s coach Edwin Basson acknowledged that the match will not be an easy one, as he expects Wanderers to come out firing.

“It won’t be a walk in the park. It’s a final, and everyone wants the cup. We have prepared well, and I believe the team is ready for the challenge,” he said.

Janice Beukes, coach of the Wanderers women’s team, noted that the match will be physically demanding.

“Unam is in great form, and has had an incredible league run. We didn’t expect to make the finals since we’re rebuilding, so it’s a pleasant surprise to be here,” she said.

She added: “It’s going to be a tough, physical game. I know Unam will come out strong, but we’re ready to hold our own. It’s going to be an interesting match against a formidable team like Unam”.
