The Namibia Tennis Association’s (NTA) club league continued last Saturday with a total of six teams grilling each other at various venues at the Olympia tennis courts.

In the Men’s First League, Nampol consolidated its position at the top of the log, and in the second league there were victories for CTC A, CTC B and CTC Poly. In the Women’s First Division SKW consolidated its position at the top of the log while CTC A also recorded a victory.

In the Men’s First League, Nampol A recorded a stunning 24-0 victory against SKW 2. Grant Rau beat Rovan van Staden 6-1, 6-1, Henco Serdyn beat Lean Minders 6-0, 6-0, Hendrik de Waal beat Oliver Hoffmann 6-0, 6-0 and Hennie Berg beat Gerhard Barnard 6-0, 6-2.

In the doubles Rau and Serdyn thrashed Van Staden and Hoffmann 6-0, 6-0, while De Waal and Berg beat Minders and Barnard 6-1, 6-1.

The highlight of the day however came in the Men’s Second Division encounter between CTC Poly and CTC OTB.

OTB took an early lead when they won the opening two singles matches. OTB’s number one player Peter Brinkmann easily defeated Poly’s Prince Loemba 6-2, 6-1, while Werner Schuckmann had a tougher time before beating Colin Nyandoro 4-6, 6-2, 6-3.

CTC Poly however made a strong comeback in the doubles, with Patrick Paulus and Socrates Muyambo beating Dirk Stein and Gerardo Reis 6-4, 6-2, while Nyandoro and Loemba beat Stein and Gerardo 6-0, 6-4. Cheered on by a passionate crowd OTB’s fate was finally sealed when Poly’s Paulus and Muyambo defeated Brinkmann and Schuckmann 6-4, 3-6, 11-9 in a tight match.

“Today we won the singles but lost the match in the doubles. We have to improve on this,” commented OTB’s Peter Brinkmann.

Poly team captain Robert Riethmueller added: “I am very proud of my team today! In league tennis it is the ‘Mannschaft’ (crew) who at the end of the day win the points.”

In the doubles, CTC A’s Ndeshi David and Bronwyn Kavarure beat Lena Brinkmann and Hileni Rijnen 6-3, 6-2, but Gallagher and Stalls teamed up to beat David and Kavarure 6-3, 6-3. In the final doubles match, CTC A’s Khuphe and Nashiku beat Brinkmann and Rijnen 6-0, 6-1.

Still in the doubles, SKW’s Sonja Martens and Annika Henning beat Birgit Hacker and Karola Hohmeier 6-0, 7-5; DTS’s Gressmann and Ahrens beat Martens and Henning 6-4, 6-4; and SKW’s Kuschke and Riedel beat Hacker and Hohmeier 6-2, 6-1. The league will continue on August 1.
