WINDHOEK – Martin Ndumba Combined School in the Kavango East Region has been experiencing a water crisis the past week and this situation could persist until next week.

Principal of the school Muyevhu Marianus  told New Era that the Ministry of Works and Transportand the Ministry of Education have been informed and are aware of the situation. Officials in the works directorate told the principal that ‘maybe’ they will restore water to the rural school by next week. The school hostel is seriously affected by the water crisis and learners are the worst affected since they now have to answer the call of nature by going into the nearby bushes, while they have to bath as well as wash their clothes in the river, which is unsafe because of the ever present crocodile menace. “Our school only gets assistance from the Divundu Rehabilitation Centre. They provide us with a tank of water just enough for cooking, which is not enough for other uses. Hostel learners are seriously affected by this and I have personally informed the Ministry of Works and our officials at the regional education office as this has been going on for some time. The water pumps are old and are always breaking down,” the principal complained.

He is requesting the regional education office to look into replacing the water generating system, because the problem is affecting learning and teaching activities, which could ultimately lower performance, as well as compromise standards.
