Several northern towns are experiencing a water shortage following a recent power failure at the water pumps at the Caluque dam in Angola that supplies these towns.
The water shortage, which is said to have started on Tuesday, is expected to last for an indefinite time.
According to NamWater’s head of marketing and corporate communication Johannes Shigwedha there is currently less water in the canal which thus affects the normal flow to the treatment plant in Oshakati.
“We would like to inform our customers that the water shortage is being experienced from August 23 until further notice; our water pumps at Calueque dam experienced power failure at some point, resulting in less water in the canal,” said Shigwedha.
Shigwedha said although the water utility has resumed pumping water into the canal, it will take a few days before normal water supply is restored.
According to Shigwedha, to ensure some water is available, water use will be restricted every day from 22h00 to 04h00 the next morning.
The situation may persist until Monday, August 29.
The affected areas are Oshakati, Ongwediva, Ondangwa, Helao Nafidi, Omuthiya, Eenhana and rural areas.
NamWater apologises for any inconvenience caused.
