WINDHOEK- The Am Weinberg restaurant has a scenic exterior great for the hot summer days/nights in the capital but if you prefer to be seated inside, the eatery caters for that as well.
The restaurant changes its menu according to seasons thus be on the look out for their new summer delicacies. Popular for its game dishes, Am Weinberg’s menu is set around rustic food with a twist of French, German and Namibian culinary ideas behind each meal that is prepared. I truly felt like a certified “food critic “because chef Rabi, one of the head chefs, gave me the opportunity to try their fresh summer menu. And I must say I was impressed. I began with the Oryx dish (I must say I was hesitant to try game meat) but the Oryx meat was infused with saffron served on a bed of smoked mozzarella and cranberry sauce with caramelised carrots, potato grata and edible flowers, which gave life to the meaning “summer dish”.
The chef presented yet another recipe, which he had whipped up in the kitchen for me, a trio of desserts made up of Baked Alaska (a dessert consisting of sponge cake and ice cream topped with browned meringue-baked for a very short time), chocolate mouse with a cherry in the middle and a puffy meringue covered in edible glitter. The baked Alaska was the winner of the three desserts and is unbelievably delicious.Plus the stuffing really compliments each other, as all layers remained in their place and did not mix considering the fact that ice cream is baked in an oven; a must try!
The portions are very filling so be prepared to carry some food home. The staff members are very friendly and have great serving etiquette. The restaurant also has an incredible exterior bar (open this summer) which gives off the feeling of a tropical bar, great for those summer nights. The eatery moreover caters for children and creates a stimulating and entertaining environment for the kids as they can play with drawing books, crafts and treasure chest, while parents get to enjoy their meals.
The venue caters for people with disabilities and is open from midday until late depending on the day of the week. Am Weinberg Restaurant is located on a hill in 13 Jan Jonker Road in Klein Windhoek. The restaurant was a winery (check out their fantastic wine cellar) that has been transformed into a restaurant.
