They might not be considered among the heavyweights of global rugby but the Namibian team arrived in high spirits in London early morning yesterday after the luxury of hitting the skies in the comfort of business class.
The squad was escorted straight from the aircraft to the reception area – normally reserved for VIP and the royal family – where the players and officials were processed and collected their luggage.
The Welwitschias were greeted at the airport by a small army of well-wishers from the Namibian Consulate, headed by the Namibian High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, Steve Katjiuanjo.
Less than two hours after touching down at the revered Heathrow Airport, the squad members were already relaxing in their hotel rooms, where they enjoyed a good rest. The coaches and management quickly knuckled down to some serious business by attending a series of briefings at the Ascot Racecourse in the afternoon, to acquaint themselves with all the technical requirements and logistics before the marathon tournament begins.
The team starts with its training sessions today.
