A man believed to be in his 50s was reportedly strangled to death on Sunday by his wife who apparently accused him of trading some of the family’s drought relief food for liquor at a local hangout.
Tjintango Washe was allegedly strangled at the village of Katjinakatji in Kavango West. His wife, Kasiku Washe, has since been arrested and charged with her husband’s murder.
It is alleged that the woman overpowered her drunk husband during a brief scuffle and strangled him with his shirt’s collar. The couple has nine children together, five of whom are said to have witnessed their father’s murder on Sunday.
News of the death of Washe – who was widely known in the village – prompted protests by some villagers who knew him, with locals reportedly baying for the suspect’s blood.
The couple is said to have had a long history of domestic violence. Police Deputy Commissioner Uaakisa Ndjavera confirmed that the suspect had on several instances reported her husband for domestic violence.
Former Swapo Party Youth League secretary, Dr Elijah Ngurare, a resident of Katjinakatji, said he knew the deceased. “He was a good man whom villagers loved very much. He worked for a lot of people here and my family also offered him a job just last month,” Ngurare said.
In other news, a dead man was found hanging on a rope tied to a tree at Ekuli village in Tondoro Constituency of Kavango West Region. It is believed that the deceased, who was later identified as Sikongo Stefanus, 58, hanged himself near his house.
“An inquest docket was opened and police investigations are underway,” said Deputy Commissioner Ndjavera.
