OUTAPI – Police in the Omusati Region on Tuesday arrested a 23-year-old woman for the murder of her cousin’s one-year-old boy at Okahao in the Omusati Region.

Omusati police spokeperson Warrant-Officer Lineekela Shikongo said the suspect was arrested for allegedly killing her cousin’s child after a drinking spree with her friends at the Okadhiyakoshuumbwa cuca shop in Elim. The suspect apparently asked permission from the mother to hold the baby boy for her while they went drinking at the shebeen.

“The suspect allegedly disappeared with the baby on Monday night and the search to find the baby that night by people from the surrounding area proved futile,” said Shikongo. The mother of the deceased reported the case on Tuesday after which the police successfully traced the accused but not the child.

Some Okahao residents said they saw the suspect carrying the child on her back in the morning but at around 10h00 she was seen alone without the little boy.

She apparently told the police she left the baby at a lake but she then took the police to some thorn trees in Okahao town where she had hidden the todler.

The little boy was found strangled with the straps of the baby carrier and the police said the motive of the gruesome act was only known to the suspect.

She is expected to appear in court today.
