Youth encouraged to embrace foreign languages

Youth encouraged to embrace foreign languages

Thrive Vinomaandero Mahua has encouraged the youth to embrace learning foreign languages as it can help them find greener pastures beyond Namibian borders, leading to further studies and job opportunities.

Mahua, a graduate in German Studies and Clinical Psychology, founded Thrive’s Tutorials and Services, where she teaches German.

She also runs AfterCare, helping students apply for and become Au Pairs in Germany.

“The German language opens many doors, including scholarships like this one, Au Pair programmes, Ausbildungen, and much more. Mastering German adds value; the higher your proficiency, the greater the opportunities,” Mahua shared after recently departing for Germany through the International Parliament Scholarship “(IPS).

The IPS programme, organised by the German Bundestag (the federal parliament), allows well-qualified young individuals with a strong interest in politics to gain first-hand experience of Germany’s parliamentary system. “IPS provides degree holders who actively promote democratic values and civil society in their home countries the chance to enhance these skills through various training sessions, seminars and university courses over five months,” added the psychologist, who is currently acclimating to the local weather.

With over 90 participants from about 40 countries, the programme enhances relationships between the participating nations and Germany, supporting the global reinforcement of democratic values.

She expressed, “You have no idea of the opportunities available to us as Namibians, the impact we can create. Our influence extends beyond our borders, and sparks our imagination. I feel deeply honoured to be part of IPS 2025.”

Mahua previously served as the deputy secretary general of the Namibia National Students Organisation (Nanso).

She advocates for sexual reproductive health rights, and authored a memoir titled What About Us, which recounts her experiences as a survivor of sexual assault.

“I should note that my volunteer work in the Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights field made me a strong candidate for this programme. It’s a responsibility I deeply cherish,” she remarked.
