Zambezi pageant queens face challenges

Lack of opportunities, limited resources and cultural norms are some of the challenges stifling the pageantry in the Zambezi region.

Despite these challenges, young pageant models are navigating through these to pursue their passion.

Janine Simataa, the reigning Miss Zambezi Bream Festival and Cultural Expo, told VIBEZ! that there is a scarcity of pageant events and competitions in the region, limiting their exposure and opportunities to showcase their talents.

Additionally, the lack of access to professional training and high-quality photoshoots hinders their development and marketability outside the region.

“Financial constraints play a huge role in limiting the progress of young models. The cost of travel to participate in events and competitions can be expensive, especially for those from low-income backgrounds. More young people are talented in Zambezi,” she said.

Her journey into modelling and beauty pageantry began at a tender age, driven by an attraction to the self-confidence and charisma that define the industry. The glamour and confidence of pageantry charmed her as a child, transforming into passion over time.

The beauty queen said she was inspired to participate in the Miss Zambezi Bream Festival and Cultural Expo beauty pageant due to her deep respect for the local culture and traditions.

“For young women interested in pageants and cultural events, it is important to define your goals, thoroughly prepare, and stay authentic. Embrace the experience as a learning opportunity, build supportive connections and prioritise self-care. Most importantly, enjoy the journey, and make the most of every moment,” she advised.

Simataa added: “One of the most memorable experiences was touring the region as part of the Miss Zambezi Bream Festival. Exploring the diverse landscapes and vibrant communities allowed me to experience their unique traditions and arts up-close. Seeing local artisans and performers in their natural settings was incredibly inspiring. The festival not only celebrated our cultural heritage, but also highlighted the beauty and unity of our region, making the whole experience truly unforgettable”. -priscillamukokobi@gmail.com
