WINDHOEK-The Art Association of Swakopmund (AAS) will be hosting a retrospective exhibition to honor the late visual artist John Muafangejo tomorrow at the Woermannhaus Gallery in Swakopmund.

Muafangejo can still be remembered as the man who inspired a whole new generation of graphic artists, especially the youngest generation who still mention his name with reverence. Muafangejo was the first non-European artist who became known far beyond Namibia’s border and whose work is still being traded on the international art market.  His artwork consist of linocuts of figures, religious and historical scenes. His images have a strong narrative quality and  illustrate African traditions. His images are all black and white prints, and upon his death left more than 5000 linoleum cuts.

In 1994 the John Muafangejo Art Centre (JMAC) was established in Katutura under the auspices of the National Art Gallery of Namibia.  The centre provides training for young local artist and their work are being displayed in the JMAC gallery.AAS will also be using this exhibition for young artists to exhibit their work to the public. The exhibition open s at 17h00 and will run until October 23.
