Fysal Oshakati City maintained the pressure on log leaders Civics FC in the MTC Namibia Premier League this weekend.
The team from the north collected four valuable points against Cymot SKW and African Stars on Saturday and Sunday respectively.
City, who surprised everybody this season, drew one-all with SKW on Saturday before collecting all three points against Stars.
The victory against Stars was even sweeter given the fact that Stars were responsible for their early exit from the MTC NFA Cup competition.
City opened the scoring against Stars early in the first half and went to halftime with the single goal lead. In the second half Stars put more pressure on City and were unlucky not to get the equalizer in the second half.
Despite the frequent attacks from the Stars strikers the City defence held tight for their team to clinch the victory.
City now occupy the second position with 33 points after 17 games, while log leaders Civics FC who did not play this weekend have 33 points after 15 games.
Ramblers, who are slotted at third spot, kept themselves in the race for the premier league title when they defeated cross-town rivals Orlando Pirates 2-1 at the Sam Nujoma Stadium on Friday evening.
Their log tally now stands at 29 points after 16 games.
The Pionierspark based side are now four points adrift of log leaders Civics whose matches were postponed because most of their players were called up for the national team’s (Brave Warriors) Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier against Libya yesterday.
The battle at the bottom of the log is also intensifying and Golden Bees remain in the drop zone despite collecting a single point this weekend. The Outjo based side are currently occupying 11th position and fought tooth and nail this weekend to collect the two points. Stars added to the misery of Bees on Saturday when they beat them 2-0 and fought hard yesterday to gain a point against SKW.
The latter were cruising to victory when Bees scored an equalizer in the final minutes. The battle at the bottom will continue as Pirates also lost this weekend.
Rock bottom club Friends’ matches against Kinaco Minolta Eleven Arrows and Blue Waters were called off because of various players being honoured to do duty for the national side.
