The Namibian Police in the Oshana region on Friday arrested a young woman from the Eheke area near Ondangwa on a charge of theft of a newborn baby.
Police spokesperson for the region, Sergeant Christina Fonsech, confirmed this to Nampa on Saturday.

Details of the suspected woman and that of the baby’s mother were not immediately available as the police were still conducting interrogations.
Reports have it that the suspect, who is a friend of the baby’s mother, committed the offence on Friday evening at Onandjokwe Lutheran Hospital near Ondangwa.

She allegedly went to the hospital to visit her friend (baby’s mother) who had given birth earlier.

The mother left the suspect alone with the baby in her ward while she went to the toilet, only to realise her friend and the baby had disappeared upon her return.

The police were then called in to investigate and they apprehended the suspect carrying the baby on her way to Eheke village the same evening.
Eheke village is situated some 10 km from Onandjokwe.

The suspect is due to appear before the Ondangwa Magistrate’s Court today. – Nampa
