About 6 000 illegal and stray weapons and explosives were discovered during an operation of the Southern Africa Police Cooperation (SARPCO) organisation, which was concluded recently in Angola.
The operation code-named “Mandume” which started on November 5 and ends next week came about following a decision by the head of police services in southern Africa at a meeting held in Lesotho last year.
Oshana Regional Commander, Deputy Commissioner Ndahangwapo Kashihakumwa, said to New Era at Oshikango after the operation that some of the explosives and firearms were destroyed.
More destruction of such weaponry will take place at a ceremony to be held at Walvis Bay on Friday, November 23.
From November 21, the operation will concentrate on the regions of Omusati, Kavango and Ohangwena.
Only three countries are currently involved in the
operation.
SARPCO is made up of 12 countries in southern Africa.
