A 21-year-old woman claimed she was drugged and raped by an unknown taxi driver during the early hours of Monday morning – at about 01h31.
City Police spokesperson Fabian Amukwelele said the victim who is a resident of Goreangab’s Mika Street, was dropped off at the Katutura police station but however could not remember what substance the offender had allegedly drugged her with.
Amukwelele told New Era that the woman who was in the company of a friend allegedly got into the taxi from Auas Valley. Her friend was dropped off at a bar in town to go buy pizzas but never returned to the taxi.
“The taxi driver followed the woman inside but could not find her and decided to drive off. The guy pulled off and allegedly forced himself on her,” said Amukwelele, adding the driver allegedly threatened to harm the woman so she complied.
Amukwelele said the case has been handed to the Namibian Police. Approached for comment, Namibian Police spokesperson Slogan Matheus said so far no formal charge has been laid because when the woman approached the Katutura police station she was highly intoxicated and her speech was slurred.
She was allegedly also unstable and violent towards police officers.
“Through her we got hold of her family’s phone number and her mother and sister came to the station but when they arrived an argument ensued,” said Matheus. He said the woman had initially wanted to fight with her family but later they all left the police station together.
Matheus said that the alleged rape victim returned later. She was dropped off by the City Police and claimed that she was kidnapped and raped by a taxi driver. “We advised her to delay her complaint and remain at the charge office to sober up because she was inconsistent. But she was violent and she walked away,” said Matheus.
The police spoke to her family to assist her and bring her back to the police station when she is sober to formalize her complaint. The family was also told to tell the victim not to shower.
“Up to now, while I am speaking to you, she has not returned yet. When we spoke to her family they said she (the victim) is very uncooperative and they don’t have control over her,” said Matheus.
