The Swapo Partyå Women’s Council (SPWC) in Lüderitz elected its leadership on Saturday at a meeting of the party’s district office.

Brigide Frederick was elected as SPWC district coordinator for Lüderitz; Elizabeth Shiyangaya is the district information officer; Justina Haikali is the district treasurer. Additional members are Ivone Kaambo, Sylvia Beukes, Saara Iileka and Helaria Mukapuli.

In her welcoming remarks, the former district coordinator Helaria Mukapuli applauded the women of Namibia for showing eagerness and willingness to remain solid, dedicated and united in working together as one, despite challenges facing them.

Mukapuli urged SPYC members to set aside their differences of the past, and to march towards joining hands and strengthening their leadership through the spirit of ubuntu, which is the spirit of oneness. She said their task is to collectively reflect on the achievements and challenges they still face and to implement policy resolutions of the SPWC congress, especially on the killing and rape of women and children.

Another concern, she said, is baby dumping, which she compared to a disease, and she wondered why women are quiet on the matter.

Mukapuli said women as mothers of the nation should engage young girls on baby dumping, and strongly discourage them from committing such acts.

“It is our duty to recruit new members, especially the youth, to grasp the full understanding and the working structures of Swapo Party in general, for future deployment in strategic areas in the //Karas Region and the entire Namibia, as they are the future leaders of this beautiful country,” said Mukapuli.SPWC regional coordinator in the //Karas Region Maria Gabriel, and SPWC’s regional treasurer as well as the secretary for the Swapo Party Elders’ Council, Annamary Pieter, attended the conference as mediators.
