The past weekend saw a drastic reduction in road accidents, according to statistics released by the Motor Vehicle Accident Fund (MVA).
This year, only eight people died this past weekend due to road crashes, in comparison to 15 last year. This is a reduction of about 47 percent.
Not only were the fatalities less this year, but so too were crashes. Forty-four crashes were recorded the past weekend in comparison to 60 crashes during the same period last year. Same with the injuries that saw a reduction of 11 percent with 104 injuries compared to 117 injuries last year.
About 59 percent of these crashes took place over Saturday and Sunday, with Saturday registering the highest accidents – 34 percent. As usual, the Khomas Region was the culprit with the highest crashes recorded (19), followed by Oshana Region with seven crashes.
Surprisingly, of the 59 vehicles involved in accidents this past weekend only three were trucks.
