Opinion – Namibia’s battle with rape, suicide and passion killing

How people die remains in the memory of those who live on, how many people are we going to lose if passion killing, rape, and suicide continue? A natural death is understandable as it is meant to be God’s calling, however, deaths such as suicide, passion killing, and rape in the nation are very much heartbreaking and leave us questioning ourselves with emotions such as, only if I knew what he or she was going through.

Rape has now become a normal satisfaction to sexual desire with passion killing being a solution in relationships and committing suicide being a solution to world problems, which is not supposed to be that way.

Rape

Just as we think the word gender means women, race means African American, and that gender violence is a women’s issue. Rape is not confined to one gender, both males and females can be raped, and because the most dominant group does not get paid attention to, women become victims of rape while men are silent about it. Rape is not just a four-letter word, it is more than that, and it includes painful emotions, difficult, and unforgettable experiences.

Our newspapers are filled with a lot of rape cases going on, it does not only happen to specific people but even old women are getting raped, newborn babies which becomes even much more questionable.

Rape is defined as unlawful sexual intercourse or any other sexual penetration of another person’s vagina, anus, or mouth, with or without force, by a sex organ, other body parts, or foreign object, without the consent of the person subjected to such penetration.

Victims of rape face trauma and it is different from person to person, rape can result in Sexually Transmitted Infections, bleeding, bruising, difficulty walking and other harmful effects, mental effects such as depression, prolonged sadness, and unexplained crying. This is why most people develop suicide thoughts.

In the end, what will hurt the most is not the words of our enemies but the silence of our friends, Martin Luther.

Suicide

Suicide is never a solution to any challenge in life. “Wedding day tragedy… a 41-year-old man, who was supposed to get married allegedly committed suicide around 07h00 at Onakatambili village in Oshana region,’’ New Era Newspaper. A day does not pass by without the newspaper having such headlines; it has become one of the main topics among Namibians.

It is important to always take someone seriously if they talk about feeling suicidal. Helping them get the support they need could save their life. It is not that most people that commit suicide or have thought of suicide want to die but they just want the situation that they are in to stop, if you get any opportunity to advise this person, please do so, you will save a life.

If seems like there is no way to solve your problems and your only solution is committing suicide, take such thoughts out of your mind, and talk to a trusted friend, a social worker, psychologist or pastor. Most suicidal thoughts are the result of feeling like you cannot cope when you are faced with a life situation, when you feel like you do not have hope for the future.

Passion killing

Benjamin was once right by stating that “Educate your children to self-control, to the habit of holding passion and prejudice and evil tendencies subject to an upright and reasoning will, and you have done much to abolish misery from their future and crimes from society.’’ Relationships are meant to be cherished, create good memories, and to be enjoyed by both involved in it. Things such as happiness, joy, love, freedom, safety, and care should always be visible and felt in romantic relationships but not assault, which result in the killing.

Most of today’s relationships come with life-threatening and horrifying experiences due to that people turn into jealous monsters, instead of being our boyfriends and husbands who are our best friends and lovers for life.

These people become haters who always want to show bravely through shedding blood.

A crime is committed in the moment of passion. Passion killing refers to a violent crime in which the perpetrator commits the act against someone because of a sudden strong impulse such as anger or jealousy rather than as a premeditated crime. When it comes to passion killing, women are the target. People have strong emotions tied to their friends, and loved ones and family crimes of passion are common.

Passion killing is said to be a murder case that happen between intimate partners, such as husband and wife, or between two lovers, a girlfriend and boyfriend. In most cases, it is caused by behaviours such as jealousy in a relationship, misunderstandings, cheating, fear, revenge and anger.

We are supposed to take care of our loved ones but not hurt them. Shooting or attacking a partner when caught cheating, and assaulting a partner out of anger for being broken up with only results in killing your loved ones.

Let love lead and let our favourite love stories be enjoyed by our partners.
