Chill TF out!  The Namibian National Association of the Deaf just needs to chill TF out!

Wow, bruh, are you serious right now? It’s comedy, for Hage’s sake!  I swear to my ancestors I could not believe that King Gucci and his skits made the front page of a whole newspaper simply because Paul Nanyeni and his chommies do not have a sense of humour.

And don’t get me wrong, I love that King Gucci made front page news. I would be a hypocrite for not loving that.  For years, I’ve been calling for the arts to be streamlined into national news.

King Gucci did it!  It’s a win for the whole industry actually.  Because of King Gucci, the arts were the centre of attention for the whole week!  That’s a lot for our tiny and unappreciated industry.

You know this country is in trouble when the Namibian National Association of the Deaf trends for ‘calling out’ comedians.

You know this country is a ticking time bomb when fellow comedians see it fit to join the Namibian National Association of the Deaf in ‘calling out’ comedians.

You know we are in trouble as people when we cannot tell the difference between mocking and comedy anymore.  The weird thing is, on the ground – as a people – we love talking sh*t; we love mocking each other – be it at work, at the car wash, at church, etc.  We love bante, or in street dialect, ‘gwara’.  Gwara is as old as time when it comes to the Namibian way of life.  How the f**k did we get here, where we are now so offended by our own way of life?

This again boils down to how we do not want to respect our own. Namibians will laugh at material by foreign comedians like Kevin Hart, Dave Chappelle, etc, but as soon as it hits home, we want to be ‘outraged’. It’s f**king amazing actually. How stupid can we be as people?  No, really, think about it. At some point, Anne Kansiime was so popular in this country that she was booked for a show in Windhoek.

Trevor Noah was in Namibia, and so were many other foreign comedians. We packed these shows.

Today, King Gucci makes a skit and everyone’s losing their sh*ts.  Are you f**king kidding me?We value foreign more than our own. We seek validation from foreigners. It’s sad.  Had this been a foreign comedian, it would have never been an issue. We would have all had our laughs and moved on.

To my surprise, we had other comedians join in on the ‘joke’ to condemn King Gucci. Are you f**king kidding me? I can only conclude that perhaps at the time of responding to questions about the supposed saga, Chicken and Tafish were not well informed about the situation at hand.  These are gentlemen I respect when it comes to their craft. I stand with King Gucci.

I stand with every other creative who is pushing the envelope.  Life is already hard as is. Hell man, not everything should be serious.  This is why arts is important. We seem to forget how important of a role art played in keeping everyone sane when the whole world was on lockdown not so long ago. The Namibian National Association of the Deaf just needs to chill TF out, along with everyone else who wants to spoil the fun for some of us who choose to smile instead of frown.  Until the next Loop, we say #GMTM
