As the quest for high quality and budget-friendly wines continues, Windhoek Wine Club has stumbled upon a gem amongst the stones of the wine collection.
This week’s feature is Pêra Doce Reserva, which we discovered at the club’s official year opening. This wine was every guest’s favourite. Most, if not all, tables around the room were hosting this bottle.
Pêra Doce, which translates to ‘sweet pear’ is produced in one of the largest wine regions in Portugal, Alentejo. One fact about wines is that they have no boundaries.
They reach every corner of the world, and this one is among those that found their way to Namibia. Pêra Doce Reserva is a medium-bodied red wine that presents itself with a dark purple colour, made of red grapes of Trincadeira, Syrah as well as Aragonez.
It is fairly smooth on the palate and has hints of oak and vanilla. On the nose, it gives off an aroma of black fruits, with a sweet scent of plum, black cherry and some blackberry in the mix.
It has soft and velvety tannins.
It is best served around the temperature of 15-16 degrees Celsius.
For one to enjoy a good glass of wine, there must be some great food to munch on after a minute or two. Some even believe that wine makes people hungry.
It could be an excuse to kill two birds with one stone.
Pêra Doce Reserva best pairs with game meat, lean meat, lamb, veal, pork and braai meat. It also pairs well with kapana and pap or the braai relish.
Apart from the punt that is widely known as the testing point to determine the quality of wine, the second thing that comes to a wine consumer’s mind is the price.
Most people believe only highly-priced wines make the standard.
Though it is factual in most instances, there are a lot of diamonds in the rough that are just waiting to be discovered.
Pêra Doce Reserva is one of the bottles with the quality of great wines and a price that will make you want to order more.
It is highly recommended for good wines on a budget.
