A 19-year-old girl, who is accused of assaulting her 70-year-old grandmother last week in Omusati region, has been granted bail of N$500 by an Oshakati magistrate.
The magistrate also ordered her to leave the village where the victim resides. Magistrate Jozanne Klazen released Teresia Ndalila Mweshininga on bail, following her maiden appearance yesterday.
Mweshininga was arrested after a video of her assaulting her grandmother at their Oshuungu homestead started trending on social media. The accused is facing one account of assault and is charged for contravening the Gender-Based Violence Act.
The magistrate said the accused is required to relocate from Oshuungu.
She must not have indirect or direct communication with her alleged victim and must not commit a similar offence.
“If the suspect fails to comply with the given regulations, she will be arrested as soon as possible,” said the magistrate.
Her case has been postponed to 5 May 2022 while she applies for legal aid and allow further investigations.
The accused was arrested at their homestead on Saturday morning after a video of the assault went viral on social media.
Mweshininga’s father, the son of the alleged victim, recorded the video.
Immediately, people on social media expressed their shock about the assault and blamed the father who took the video for not stopping the fight.
The accused’s mother has also blamed her husband for recording a video instead of stopping his daughter from attacking the elderly woman.
The accused’s mother said her daughter will relocate to Oshakati to her sister’s house where she will be getting counselling from the social workers.
